Good morning, San Diego.

Remember back in January when a City Council committee shot down Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera’s vacation rental tax? Well, that was really a twofold tax proposal that took aim at both short-term vacation rentals and second residences that sit vacant most of the year.
Now the empty second homes tax is back for round two — and it looks like it might make it through the rules committee this time, flying solo.
When the tax was proposed along with the vacation rental tax, two committee members said they would have supported it if it was presented on its own. So, Elo-Rivera listened, and will be presenting the revamped, independent empty second homes tax today.
Back to recalling our previous coverage — a while ago, we teased the arrival of an anti-McDonald’s vegan fast food chain. It’s finally here. The Pacific Beach location opened its doors earlier this month. Don’t worry, Hillcrest, you’re still next.

By Tessa Balc • Times of San Diego
Bringing the proposal back in front of the committee, Elo-Rivera has cut out the more contentious full-time vacation rental tax and kept what a couple of council members said they would support — a tax on vacant second homes.

Opinion: Teacher union wrong to endorse Richard Barrera for state superintendent
The California Teachers Association’s endorsement is troubling because of his lack of accountability during a sex harassment scandal at a local labor union.
