Five questions with Daniel Atkinson: San Diego Tijuana International Jazz Festival takes music beyond borders
The San Diego Tijuana International Jazz Festival is back for its third year, and get this — you can see some shows for free.
If you’re not familiar with the binational festival, it kicks off next week with two days of programming in San Diego and two days of programming in Tijuana. The opening night is on Thursday at the Quartyard in East Village, followed by Friday on Avenida Revolución in Tijuana. Saturday is at California Center for the Arts in Escondido and Sunday will be back on La Revu.
It’s one thing to have a unique concept of a music festival flip-flopping over a border each day, but it’s another thing to book an interesting lineup. Lucky for attendees, this festival has both.
The festival’s director, San Diego Jazz Ventures executive director Daniel Atkinson, is bringing the Mingus Dynasty back to the region. When Atkinson first got them here in 2018 with his festival partner Julián Plascencia, the band — organized by Charles Mingus’ wife, Sue Mingus, after his death to honor his work— played Mingus’ album “Tijuana Moods” in Tijuana for the first time.
Atkinson said that 2018 performance “was something incredibly special” to witness. They’re looking to bring some of that magical moment back to life on La Revu this time around.

🧸 Geppetto’s has spent 50 years finding the ‘fun factor’ in toys for kids and the young at heart: The independent toy retailer has stood the test of time and grown to nine locations throughout San Diego County.
