LA JOLLA – It’s one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego — just ask the seals and sea lions.

And the tourists.

Walking the coast path from the Children’s Pool to the Cove and up to the Coast Walk Trail during summer, you will hear so many accents and different languages that your head will spin. And that’s a good thing — the more, the merrier. Enjoying the Jewel even brings a smile to Sunny Jim’s cave.

What happened here in 2025? The biggest story is the secession effort, of course. But there were others:

Chaos and confusion at La Jolla Town Council

Wracked by internal dissent, the La Jolla Town Council swore in five new trustees in July to replace members who had resigned in protest over the policies and leadership style of the current president. The action came in response to weeks of infighting and serious disagreements among group members that have led some in the community to call for the current council to be dissolved.

La Jolla push to secede from San Diego can proceed

A drive by a La Jolla nonprofit to turn the community into its own municipality can resume following a judge’s Oct. 24 order issued. Superior Court Judge Judy Bae ruled against the city of San Diego and in favor of the Association for the City of La Jolla and the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission. The incorporation process is set to proceed to the next stage, which involves a comprehensive review by LAFCO. If the agency approves the application, the cityhood proposal would go to a public vote.

Endless Summer over for Mike Hynson

Legendary local surfer and board shaper Hynson, who died on Jan. 10 at age 82, will always be remembered for his ingenuity in trailblazing surfing and surfboard design. The charismatic wave rider was known as well for his stylish approach to the sport, and for co-starring in Bruce Brown’s classic 1966 surf documentary “The Endless Summer.”

Murals of La Jolla unveils 50th

The April milestone was celebrated by The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, stewards of the Murals of La Jolla program. Created by acclaimed artist Andrea Zittel, the 50th mural was installed at 7569 Girard Ave.

La Jolla Village News joins Times of San Diego and NEWSWELL

In May, San Diego Community Newspaper Group became part of NEWSWELL and Times of San Diego. NEWSWELL, a nonprofit based at Arizona State University, was founded to build innovative solutions that help local newsrooms and communities thrive. It also operates Times of San Diego. A month later, San Diego Community Newspaper Group closed its Pacific Beach office and moved its staff to the Times of San Diego office in Bankers Hill. A few months later, veteran journalist Andrew Keatts was tapped to lead Times of San Diego and the newspapers as general manager and editor.

Yoga can return to the coast

It’s back to the beaches and shoreline parks for yoga classes, as a federal appeals court struck down on June 4 the city’s ban on free yoga taught in public outdoor spaces. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found that teaching yoga is protected speech under the First Amendment.

City approves permanent outdoor dining for La Jolla Shores

With a permit for outdoor cafe-style dining in La Jolla Shores about to run out, the city in July approved a deal to make it a permanent fixture in the coastal neighborhood. The business strip along Avenida de la Playa in La Jolla Shores, which has been closed off at both ends to vehicular traffic since 2020, will now be permitted to remain open with a promenade allowing outdoor dining patios.

Repaired bridge on Coast Walk Trail

The Friends of Coast Walk Trail’s ongoing maintenance and development program completed approximately $125,000 worth of repairs to the bridge, which reopened to the public on Aug. 29.
