Oakmont of Escondido Hills senior living community recently celebrated a very special milestone: the 101st birthday of beloved resident Pearl McKinley.
The Oakmont community gathered last Friday to honor McKinley’s remarkable life, shaped by a deep love for family and a vibrant array of creative passions that continue to inspire those around her.
During World War II, at 18 years old, McKinley played a vital role at Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg, CA, where she managed the telephone office. It was there where she met her husband, whose love and support became a cornerstone of her life. Together, they built a family with four children, nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren!
“My family is my greatest joy,” McKinley shared, reflecting on the bonds that give her life purpose.
McKinley’s creativity shines through her many talents. She mastered the mandolin, performing with San Diego’s Mandolin Orchestra and has created more than 100 crocheted items, including scarves and blankets lovingly gifted to family and friends.
When asked about the secret to her longevity and fulfillment, McKinley offered sage advice.
“Take care of your health, be happy every day and treat others kindly,” McKinley said. “A cheerful mood in the morning sets the tone for a healthy and happy life!”
