A passenger train fatally struck a teen bicycle rider Friday on a stretch of coastal railway in Sorrento Valley.

According to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, witnesses told deputies that three boys on their bicycles were stopped at the crossing arm to allow a northbound train to pass at around 12:30 p.m.

After the northbound train passed through, one of the boys, an unidentified 17-year-old, crossed the tracks on his bike not realizing there was also a passing southbound Amtrak train.

The boy was struck by the train and did not survive his injuries. The two other bicyclists were not injured.

The medical examiner’s office will identify the teen and determine cause and manner of death, pending notification of his family.
