Officials from the cities of Del Mar, Encinitas and Solana Beach joined San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts in announcing that their cities will serve as host towns for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.

Nearly 100 communities from San Luis Obispo to San Diego are participating in the host town program for the games. More than 7,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from around the world will compete in the games, , which run from July 21 through July 24 in Los Angeles.

“I’m so pleased to have worked alongside leaders from Del Mar, Encinitas and Solana Beach to welcome these extraordinary athletes,” Roberts said. “They will enjoy great hospitality from our communities.”

Encinitas Mayor Kristin Gaspar presented organizers with ceremonial keys to her city. Also present during Wednesday’s announcement at Cal State University San Marcos were Del Mar Councilwoman Sherryl Parks and Solana Beach Councilman Mike Nichols. The university also is accommodating Special Olympics athletes.

The Host Town program has been part of the Special Olympics World Games since 1995.
