Due to ongoing heavy storm rainfall, San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality Wednesday issued a general rain advisory for all coastal beaches and bays.
Rain advisories are public health warnings issued after significant rainfall to alert people that urban runoff carrying bacteria and pollutants has entered bays and oceans posing a risk of illness from surfing or swimming for 72 hours.
During major storm events, urban runoff causes bacteria levels to rise significantly in ocean and bay waters, especially near storm drains, creeks, rivers and lagoon outlets.
DEHQ also issued closure notices for the Imperial Beach shoreline and the Silver Strand shoreline in Coronado, the Tijuana Slough to the end of Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach, the Imperial Beach Pier, and for the storm drain area 250 feet north of 2540 East Mission Bay Drive.
Those areas will remain closed until sampling confirms they are once again safe for water contact.
The county agency said the Tijuana River is flowing and reaching recreational waters, noting recent water-quality samples there have not met state health standards.
Advisories were also issued by the department for La Jolla Cove and Avenida De La Playa in La Jolla Shores. An advisory was also lifted by for the San Elijo Lagoon Outlet in Cardiff.
Updates on beach advisories and closures are posted on www.sdbeachinfo.com. They are also available by calling the 24-hour hotline at 619-338-2073.
