Overview: AWP Program

Once finished, the AWP Program will supply up to 30% of East San Diego County’s drinking water, using state-of-the-art technology to purify recycled water- marking a big step toward a more reliable local water supply.

Construction on new water infrastructure is moving full steam ahead at Mission Trails Regional Park

Crews have already completed more than 15% of the pipeline installation for this phase of the East County Advanced Water Purification program.

Once finished, the AWP Program will supply up to 30% of East County’s drinking water, using state-of-the-art technology to purify recycled water, marking a big step toward a more reliable local water supply.

Along the Father Junipero Serra Trail, work is underway to rehabilitate the existing sewer pipeline that carries peak sewer flows to the City of San Diego. Crews are also installing a new pipeline that will transport residuals from the AWP treatment process.

Construction activity will be visible on both the east end of the park, just east of Old Mission Dam parking lot, at the west end near the Visitor Center, and along the paved Father Junipero Serra Trail.

The work takes place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Park visitors can expect intermittent trail closures along parts of Father Junipero Serra Trail during work hours.

To reduce the effects on park visitors, crews are using a method called sliplining.  In simple terms, a new 32-inch sewer pipeline and a 12-inch residuals pipeline are being pulled inside the existing 48-inch pipeline, one segment at a time. This approach helps keep disruptions to a minimum, while work continues through 2028.

Keep in mind that parking and pedestrian access will also be affected during construction due to the ongoing vehicle gate closures on both ends of the Father Junipero Serra Trail through the duration of the project and construction activities.

The left-hand turn pocket into the Jackson Drive parking lot from Mission Gorge Road will be closed 24/7 beginning this month and will last for several weeks. The parking lot will remain open during this work.

The latest updates on construction and which trails will be affected and when can be found here.
