Voice of San Diego’s 2025 Parent’s Guide to San Diego Schools helps local families make informed decisions for their child’s education. It’s one of the most authoritative school guides in San Diego County.
The guide, which is available in Spanish as well, provides school performance data in an easy-to-use format, and offers answers to a wide variety of parents’ questions and concerns.
There is mountain of data about each of the county’s more than 720 public schools, from enrollment to chronic absenteeism to graduation rates. The authors have analyzed test scores and controlled for family income to show how effective schools actually are at educating kids.
In addition, helpful articles explain school terms, options for after-school care, tips for getting involved with your school, and how to help your child achieve educational success.
This year the guide examines a persistent problem in education — how academic achievement goes down in poor neighborhoods — and explains what parents can do to improve their situation.
The guide is supported by The Girard Foundation, David and Annie Malcolm, Girl Scouts San Diego, UC San Diego Extension Studies, San Diego Regional EDC, City of San Diego Retired Employees Association and the news site’s members.
Voice of San Diego’s journalists will host events throughout the year to explain the guide and answer community questions. The next two sessions are:
- Saturday, March. 1 at 2:30pm, City Heights Library – open to the public
- Thursday, March. 6 at 3:00pm, Home Avenue Head Start Center – limited to Head Start families
