A Normal Heights resident who allegedly attacked a tenant of his with a baseball bat during an argument early Thursday refused to leave his home when police arrived, prompting an hours-long standoff that finally ended after the suspect was arrested.

The alleged assault — which was reported in the 4800 block of 35th Street, a block and a half off Adams Avenue in Normal Heights — took place at around 6:30 Thursday morning.

As officers tried to get the suspect to exit his house and give himself up peaceably, paramedics took the victim — who rents a cottage behind the suspect’s home — to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect remained barricaded in his home for at least an hour and a half despite commands to surrender, police said. Law enforcement then dispatched special weapons and tactics personnel to the house, surrounding and taping off the block.

The stalemate continued for several hours, until officers blew up a concussion grenade on the property at around 11 a.m., prompting the suspect to exit his home and surrender. He was taken into custody without further incident.
