SAN DIEGO – A woman who angrily declared “that’s not how you treat a lady” and then stabbed two men in Ocean Beach is going to prison after pleading guilty.
Jana Nicole Halaska, 29, will be sentenced on Feb. 17 in San Diego Superior Court. Her sentence will range from four to eight years in state prison, according to court records.
Both men, Gabriel Millan and Christopher Abrahamsen, were seriously injured in the April 13 incident at 1:06 a.m. at Bacon Street and Newport Avenue. They were rushed to an emergency room at a hospital, where they remained for many days.
Both Millan and Abrahamsen were drinking and playing music in front of Hodad’s, and an intoxicated woman started acting aggressively toward them, according to court papers filed by the prosecutor.
Halaska wandered by and saw one man kick the intoxicated woman, who was screaming at him. Halaska yelled out, “That’s not how you treat a lady!”
She pulled a knife and stabbed both men when they walked into an alley behind Hodad’s.
Both men were startled by the attack as neither one knew Halaska. In a statement by Millan, he said he is “scarred for life” and has anxiety over his safety, so much so that he has left Ocean Beach and moved to Oregon with his family.
“When I was stabbed, I knew my time was short when I felt the blood leaving my body and was unsure if I would live or die until I woke after surgery,” said Millan.
Halaska pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on Jan. 14 as her trial date was approaching.
An attempted murder charge was dismissed in the stabbing of Millan.
Halaska’s attorney tried to resolve the case into a mental health diversion program, but Judge Chandra Reid denied this motion on Dec. 10, records show.
Halaska remains in the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility on $500,000 bail.
