A deep sinkhole Wednesday temporarily closed a prominent intersection in the middle of Coronado.

The 5-foot-deep sinkhole located near the intersection of Orange and Fourth avenues was reported to the Coronado Police Department about 9:20 a.m.

Police said officers diverted traffic around the sinkhole, which blocked a lane on Fourth Avenue in the middle of the island city, which is connected to the mainland by the Coronado Bridge.

The cause of the sinkhole was unclear.

Water department crews were on the scene by 10 a.m. Wednesday, sparking speculation a broken water main may have led to the fissure.

All lanes of traffic were reopened by 11 p.m., according to Caltrans.
