A man already facing charges for allegedly trying to stab a San Diego County sheriff’s deputy pleaded not guilty Monday to new charges related to a separate alleged knife attack on a jail deputy.
Ernesto Olea, 30, is charged with attempted murder of a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and other charges related to an alleged Oct. 20 attack at the George Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa.
Specific details such as whether the deputy sustained injuries were not available Monday. A criminal complaint alleges a knife was used in the attempted murder and assault.
Olea also pleaded not guilty on Monday to a separate battery on a custodial officer, which allegedly occurred on Aug. 27, as well as possession of a weapon in a penal institution on Aug. 27, Oct. 20, Nov. 2 and Nov. 27.
Olea was previously arrested and charged with a knife attack on a deputy that allegedly occurred in May.
In that case, Olea was being taken from court to a holding cell when he allegedly used a makeshift knife to try to stab a deputy.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said that when the deputy opened the holding cell door, Olea tried to stab him in the head and neck. The deputy was able to fend off the attack and sustained only minor cuts to his hand, the sheriff’s office said.
Olea remains in custody without bail.
