A 74-year-old man already in custody on suspicion of committing a 2023 South Bay murder has been named a person of interest in the probe into human remains found earlier this week on a Southcrest property.

The announcement comes one day after investigators scoured a property at 3443 Newton Ave. after California Highway Patrol detectives “developed information leading investigators to suspect human remains were on the property,” the San Diego Police Department said in a statement.

The identity of the remains and the person’s cause of death are still under investigation.

The person of interest named Wednesday, Dwight William Rhone, is already in custody without bail on murder and other charges for allegedly shooting 54-year-old Bernardo Moreno on Interstate 5, near state Route 905, then setting Moreno’s body on fire on Oct. 13, 2023.

The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office said Rhone was a previous tenant of the Newton Avenue address.

Anyone with information regarding Rhone’s potential involvement in “additional crimes” was asked to call the San Diego Police Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
