Traffic was backed up Monday morning on the I-805 in the Kearny Mesa area when a big rig truck crashed and spilled fuel on the roadway.

The crash occurred on the northbound 805 near the transition to the 52 freeway after midnight, the California Highway Patrol said.

Three lanes on the 805 were shut down because of the crash and fuel spill.

Multiple lanes remained closed as of 6:30 a.m., and CHP officials said it could take up to eight hours to clean up the spill.

Crews remained on the scene working to clean the spill.
