A 20-year-old serviceman was killed and two other Camp Pendleton-based Marines injured over the weekend when the car they were in crashed on Interstate 5 near their northern San Diego County military base, authorities reported Monday.

USMC Lance Cpl. Cristian Banuelos of Mount Vernon, Washington, lost control of the northbound BMW 440i for unknown reasons about 5:45 a.m. Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Marine Corps.

The vehicle swerved to the left south of Las Pulgas Road and struck a center guardrail, then veered to the other side of the freeway, overturned and struck an emergency callbox and a barbed-wire fence, CHP public-affairs Officer Hunter Gerber said.

Banuelos died at the scene of the accident. One of his passengers, a 21-year-old man, was transported to a trauma center with serious injuries. The other, a 19-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries in the crash and did not require hospital care, according to the CHP.
