A 21-year-old motorist who was killed in a crash off Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton was identified Wednesday.

Deshon Johnson of Inglewood was the driver of a Toyota Highlander heading north on the 5 Freeway at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

For unknown reasons the Toyota — also carrying a 3-year-old girl and a 26-year-old woman — went off the roadway, according to Officer Hunter Gerber of the California Highway Patrol. The SUV then crashed into a eucalyptus tree and overturned.

CHP, fire crews and paramedics responded to the scene, but the driver died of his injuries, Gerber said.

Both passengers were taken to hospitals to be treated for injuries not considered life-threatening, officials said. The passengers are from Riverdale, Georgia.

CHP officers were investigating the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Oceanside CHP office at 760-643-3400.
