An unidentified man was hospitalized Wednesday after his vehicle careened off a freeway and went down an embankment near the Sweetwater River.
Shortly after 4 a.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a vehicle that left the freeway and went down the embankment on eastbound state Route 54, west of Interstate 805 in Chula Vista.
Emergency responders used 150 feet of cable to reach the driver and the vehicle. The man was then taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista in an unknown condition.
Officers at the scene said DUI may have been a factor in the crash.
