Vehicles that crash off a freeway rarely stick the landing like an Olympic gymnast, but this one did.

An out-of-control SUV careened off northbound state Route 163 near SR-52 Thursday, landing nose-first on the outskirts of a Kearny Villa Road auto dealership and coming to rest balanced perpendicular to the ground, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The green Ford Explorer struck four other vehicles — two moving and two parked — during the accident, which occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m., CHP public affairs Officer Robert Catano said.

The crash caused only minor injuries but took out roughly 40 feet of fencing and forced a brief closure of a nearby onramp from Clairemont Mesa Boulevard to SR-163, Catano said.
