One driver was arrested and six vehicles were impounded at an overnight sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint in Vista.

The checkpoint in the 500 block of South Melrose Drive began at 8 p.m. Saturday and ended at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, said Sgt. Hernan Gonzalez of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Sobriety tests were conducted on five drivers and one arrest was made for driving under the influence of drugs, Gonzalez said.

In addition, five drivers were cited for being unlicensed, three for driving on a suspended driver’s license, one for possession of alcohol under the age of 21, and six for various vehicle code violations.

A total of 1050 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and 464 vehicles were directed for further screening.

The sheriff’s department and other local law enforcement agencies routinely operate sobriety checkpoints, often announced in advance, to deter impaired driving.
