Readers will find a welcome surprise stuffed inside this week’s issues of the Peninsula Beacon, Downtown News and Uptown News: The return of the San Diego Reader.
The alt-weekly that was a standby for concert listings, long-form storytelling and local reporting ceased its 52-year print run just over a year ago.
But the publication’s ownership kept it alive as an online publication. For the last few months, we’ve been talking about whether there was a way to bring back the print version.
Those conversations brought us to today, where we’re starting off with a new arts and entertainment-focused insert that will run in the community papers we’re releasing this week.
For now, this will be a monthly feature, so it’ll be back in the same papers in June. Maybe sometime soon we can get back to the paper’s weekly roots, but for now it’ll be a monthly.
Times of San Diego has not acquired the Reader. This is a partnership. But we’re excited to play our part in bringing back a print brand that had disappeared from the community, and to see where this can go next.
Go grab a copy of the Peninsula Beacon, Downtown News or Uptown News and check it out. Let us know what you think.
