PACIFIC BEACH – Mission Bay Golf Course and Practice Center has a new operator for its clubhouse.
San Diego-based Harland Brewing Co. is expected to sign a ten-year lease with the city of San Diego to run the new clubhouse at Mission Bay Golf Course.
Since 1919, Mission Bay Golf Course at 2702 N. Mission Bay Drive has been one of three publicly-owned and operated municipal courses in San Diego run by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, which also includes Torrey Pines and Balboa Park.
All three facilities are funded through a dedicated fund. Course revenues are reinvested into maintenance, staffing, and improvements, with a portion of the funds transferred to the city’s general fund.
Harland plans to move into the newly built Mission Bay clubhouse once the lease agreement is fully executed. Base rent for the new lease reportedly would start at $8,500 per month, or $102,000 in the first year, with a fixed 3.5% annual increase. On top of base rent, the city would collect 7% of gross revenue from food and beverage sales, including alcohol, above a natural breakpoint.
The clubhouse at Mission Bay Golf Course has already been built, said Caleb Olsen with the city.
“Harland Brewing Co. will operate food and beverage operations in the restaurant building that was recently completed this month, and Harland will be the first lessee to operate out of that building in the recently completed restaurant facility at Mission Bay Golf Course,” Olson said. “The city will continue to operate the golf course, driving range, and practice facility.”
Olsen said that the city has been operating Mission Bay Golf Course since 2003.
Harland has projected that the new clubhouse revenues would generate about $45,000 in the first year, bringing total first-year lease revenue to about $147,000.
Under the terms of the lease, Harland would be responsible for all operating, management, maintenance, repair, and occupancy costs for the space. City staff and the company would meet annually to review an operating plan and quarterly for ongoing coordination.
Harland Brewing is expanding its San Diego footprint with this new brewing project. It will occupy a fully built-out 2,000-square-foot restaurant space at MBGC, including a ventless hood system, walk-in cooler, counter infrastructure, and ADA-compliant restrooms. There will also be surface parking accessible from North Mission Bay Drive.
The new venue will have a patio facing the golf course, designed to accommodate casual dining, live music, and family-friendly events. Harland will have the exclusive opportunity to serve all on-site users three meals a day, as well as drinks. It is expected to have a full menu complementing its lineup of craft beers in the brewery’s growing collection of hospitality-driven destinations.
