A woman sustained major injuries early Sunday when she fell asleep while driving and crashed into a water main in Rancho San Diego.
The wreck occurred in the 11500 block of Fury Lane at about 7:50 a.m.
Authorities said the driver, a medical worker who had worked all night, left the roadway and went up an embankment. Her car went airborne before hitting a large water pipe.
She suffered head injuries in the wreck and was transported to a local hospital, according to San Miguel Fire and Rescue.
The accident left up to 40 people without water as thousands of gallons ran down the street. Initially, authorities could not shut off the water as the pipe needed to be repaired.
