Crews working to contain the smoldering remnants of a brush fire that scorched about 125 acres in the Cleveland National Forest over the weekend had the job about 60 percent complete Monday.

The blaze erupted east of Sunrise Highway in Pine Valley about 12:30 p.m. Saturday and spread through dry vegetation in difficult-to-access terrain.

The fire caused no reported structural damage or injuries but prompted a temporary closure of a stretch of Interstate 8 due to smoke wafting over the freeway.

The blaze, dubbed the Gun Fire due to its proximity to a back-country hunting club, was expected to be fully surrounded by Thursday night, forestry officials said.

The cause remained under investigation this afternoon.
