A patrol officer suffered apparently minor injuries Wednesday in a struggle with a suspected carjacker following a brief road chase from City Heights to Lincoln Park, police said.
The events that led to the pursuit and arrest began about 9:45 a.m., when a motorist made a 911 call to report that a man had pulled her out of her 2010 Ford Escape at the intersection of Fairmount and University avenues and driven off in it, according to San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk.
When officers caught up with the stolen SUV a short time later at Market and 47th streets in Chollas View, the man behind the wheel refused to yield, Stirk said. The suspect continued to flee to the south for less than a mile, then pulled over, jumped out of the vehicle and ran off.
Officers chased the man down and took him into custody about 10 a.m. following a scuffle. The arrested man’s name was not immediately available.
Paramedics were summoned to evaluate a patrolman for a complaint of pain to his right elbow, Stirk said. It was unclear if the officer required hospital care, the sergeant said.
