A 44-year-old man was identified after he died during a swim off the Coronado coast, authorities said.

Shawn R. Stewart of Coronado was swimming with a friend shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday when he began complaining of feeling bad because shortness of breath, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Stewart then became unresponsive and was taken to shore where lifeguards tried in vain to resuscitate him, officials with the Medical Examiner’s Office said. He was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.

Authorities said an autopsy had not been performed as of early Friday morning.
