The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has issued endorsements in the past week in two San Diego congressional races — one to Democrat Scott Peters and the other to Republican Diane Harkey.
Peters, who is running for a third term in the 52nd District, was first endorsed by the chamber in 2014 and is one of the few Democrats backed by the influential national business organization.
“We need more pragmatic and commonsense leaders like Scott Peters. Peters is focused on getting things done for the 52nd District, not scoring political points,” said Rob Engstrom, senior vice president and national political director of the chamber.
Peters has also been endorsed by the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Harkey, a member of the state Board of Equalization, is running for the 49th District seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Darrell Issa.
“Diane knows and supports businesses, large and small, and knows that business is important to keeping the economy strong and unemployment low in the 49th,” said Vartan Djihanian of the U.S. chamber’s western region.
Harkey faces Democrat Mike Levin, an environmental lawyer, in the Nov. 6 election. Peter’s opponent is Republican Omar Qudrat.
The chamber is the world’s largest business group representing 3 million American businesses, 96 percent of which are small businesses.
