A couple escaped with minor injuries from a single- story house fire that caused an estimated $200,000 in damage to their home in Oceanside, officials said.

Dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a house fire around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 4600 block of Briar Ridge Road, Oceanside Fire Department Battalion Chief Pete Lawrence said. Crews arrived shortly before 2:40 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the front door and attic vents of the single- story house, he said.

Firefighters knocked down the flames in around 15 minutes, but remained on scene for around three hours to check for hot spots, salvage belongings and secure the structure, Lawrence said.

A man and a woman were inside the house when they heard what sounded like an explosion in the rear bedroom and saw the house start to fill with smoke before they evacuated the house, Lawrence said. The man suffered minor burns and the woman was uninjured.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

The couple went to stay with friends nearby, Lawrence said.

The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the structure and $50,000 to contents, Lawrence said.
