The new $10 million, 14,291-square-foot El Cajon Animal Shelter has opened its doors to the public.
More than 1,000 people showed up to tour the new shelter Saturday during its grand opening. The single story, contemporary facility is providing veterinary and pet adoption services to residents in El Cajon and La Mesa.
Located at 1373 N. Marshall Avenue — within walking distance of the former shelter — the facility includes administrative offices, housing for animals, veterinary services for sick and injured animals, grooming, play and interaction areas, pet adoption services and a pet exercise area.
The facility was paid for by sales tax revenue under Proposition O, which was passed by voters in 2004.
Colorado-based Animal Arts and San Diego-based Ferguson Pape Baldwin Architects worked alongside C.W. Driver Companies to design the project.
