California State University San Marcos was named one of the best colleges in the nation to work for in an annual study by the authoritative Chronicle of Higher Education.

Cal State San Marcos President Karen Haynes announced the award Monday at a special meetings of employees.

In its seventh annual report on The Academic Workplace, the Chronicle surveyed more than 43,000 employees at 278 colleges and universities. A total of 92 institutions achieved the “Great College to Work For” recognition.

Cal State San Marcos was the only public, four-year university recognized in California.

“Together, we have created an amazing learning organization, an institution that recognizes employees’ worth and that encourages collaboration across divisions, taking risks and communicating openly,” said Haynes. “Our collective efforts have made CSUSM a great college to work for and I am proud to lead this great institution.”

“The institutions that the Great Colleges program recognizes provide innovative educational experiences — while also offering their employees outstanding workplace experiences — and we are eager to help readers learn more about them,” said Liz McMillen, the Chronicle’s editor.

Founded in 1989, the university boasts a mid-sized, modern campus on a 304-acre hillside overlooking the city of San Marcos in north San Diego County.
