The American Diabetes Association is partnering with San Diego-area Chick-fil-A restaurants Tuesday to encourage people to determine their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

San Diegans who take a 60-second online test can take their results to any of the 13 local Chick-fil-A restaurants to receive a free order of Chick-fil-A Grilled Nuggets, one of the healthiest fast foods for people suffering from diabetes.

The test at www.diabetes.org/alertday is anonymous and asks simple lifestyle questions.

The free food is available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. You must bring a completed risk test, either a paper printout from the website or an electronic copy on a smartphone.

“We’re excited to partner once again with the ADA for its annual Alert Day,” said Kyle Steck, franchise operator of Chick-fil-A in Santee. “We encourage the community to take the online risk assessment and come enjoy an entree on us.”

The ADA reports that 7.2 million Americans with diabetes are currently undiagnosed, with 1 million of them in California. In addition, 84 million American adults have prediabetes, a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes.

“You can lower your risk for type 2 diabetes with healthy food choices, weight loss, exercise and medication, but knowing your risk is the first step,” said Alissa Maier, Pacific region director for the ADA.
