A San Diego police officer and a prisoner he was transporting were injured Monday when the cruiser they were in crashed on Interstate 15 in City Heights.
A San Diego Gas & Electric Co. worker named Dejon Thomas told OnScene TV that the officer may have suffered a seizure before the crash.
Thomas and his wife contacted authorities after seeing the cruiser hit a center median and then swerving up an embankment. Thomas said he pulled the officer out of the vehicle, adding: “We just did what we could until responders came.”
Police Lt. Charles Lara hailed the good Samaritan: “We commend his civic-mindedness.”
The crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m., when the lawman suffered an unknown medical crisis while heading south en route to SDPD headquarters, police said.
Medics took the involved lawman to Mercy Hospital for an evaluation, said SDPD Officer Dino Delimitros. A 31-year-old arrestee — riding in the black-and-white police SUV at the time of the wreck — apparently was unhurt, according to Delimitros.
