The San Diego State men’s basketball team will be without its starting guard and captain for at least two weeks, possibly more because of injury.

Senior Trey Kell sprained his left ankle against UNLV in Las Vegas last Saturday. He played for a total of three minutes and left the game on crutches.

“He saw our doctors when we came back and hopefully we’re looking at a minimum of two weeks that he’s going to be out,” Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher said. “I think that would probably be the earliest and it could stretch anywhere to three and beyond.”

This ruled Kell out for Saturday’s home game against Air Force. The last time he sprained his ankle, he was out for 13 days and this injury appears to be worse than the last one.

Kell rolled his ankle against Washington State but was able to return late in the game. He tried to play against USD four days later but scratched himself after going through warmups.

The earliest Kell could possibly return is Feb. 10, which means he will also miss next Wednesday’s road game at Fresno State.

Dutcher, however, isn’t worried about having someone to step up for Kell. Junior Jeremy Hemsley filled in for Kell in the UNLV game and went 7-of-12 from the field for 19 points.

“It was Jeremy in the last game and it could be someone else the next game, but in all truthfulness, too, you’re losing a first team all-conference guard and a senior captain,” he said. “So we can say what we want about next man up, [but] it always hurts when you lose a talented guard out of the lineup.”

If rehab goes well, Kell will be ready for the road game against Nevada on Feb. 10.
