A San Diego rock climber was killed in an accident at Tahquitz Peak in Idyllwild that left him dangling on a rope, a fire captain said Sunday.

The climber, identified by coroner’s officials as Bryan Rockwood, 49, of San Diego, was harnessed while scaling the one half-mile north face of Lily Rock at the peak Saturday in Humber Park.

Witnesses told firefighters that rocks tumbled from the rock formation and that they saw Rockwood hanging from a rope and looking unconscious, Cal Fire Capt. Milford Ferguson said.

Firefighters were dispatched at 11:07 a.m. to the park in response to a hiker down call. Members of the mountain rescue team eventually were called to reach Rockwood, Ferguson said.

Rockwood was pronounced dead at the scene, fire authorities said.

It was not immediately known how far down Rockwood dangled on the rope. Lily Rock is a well-known location among rock-climbing enthusiasts
