An active westerly swell is forecast to bring unusually high surf to San Diego beaches over the next five to eight days.

The National Weather Service office in San Diego said the surf will begin to build on Saturday and peak on Tuesday and Wednesday with waves as high as 15 feet.

“This swell will likely produce high — locally very high — surf at the beaches, along with very strong rip currents and waves that will overtop jetties and coastal rock formations,” the weather service said.

“Sneaker waves may also occur Monday as the surf builds rapidly,” according to the forecast. “A second round of high surf is possible next weekend.”

The weather service said the highest surf will be off beaches south of San Clemente Island.
