A fast food customer who didn’t have enough money to pay for his order tried to run off with cash from the register instead, police said Sunday.

The cashier at the restaurant had just offered to cover the difference for the customer, said San Diego Police Department Sgt. Thomas Sullivan.

It happened at about 2:45 p.m. at a Jack in the Box in the 800 block of University Avenue in Hillcrest.

The suspect had ordered food but came up short when paying for his order, Sullivan said. When the employee decided to pay the remaining amount, the suspect reached into the open cash register drawer.

After a struggle ensued, the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money, Sullivan said. The employee followed the suspect outside and flagged down passing officers, who pursued the suspect on foot.

The suspect ran onto the 163 Freeway, where he was caught and arrested on suspicion of petty theft. He was identified as 26-year-old Roy Davis.

Despite the dangerous freeway conditions, there were no injuries reported.
