A gas leak in a Mid-City residential neighborhood Wednesday forced the evacuation of nearby homes, according to a fire official.

The leak was detected shortly after 3 p.m. in the 4600 block of Orange Ave., according to San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief William Melendez.

The gas was leaking from the street and into nearby homes, he said.

Fire crews evacuated 11 residences and SDG&E was called to the scene

Crews quickly shored up the leak and residents were being allowed back into their homes by Wednesday night.

There were no reported injuries, which Melendez called “very fortunate.”

The exact cause of the leak was not immediately known, but a video reporter at the scene said construction work was ongoing in the neighborhood.
