An international soccer doubleheader scheduled Saturday at Petco Park in San Diego has been postponed to make way for the World Cup, the Padres announced Monday.

The Padres attributed the postponement of the San Diego Clasico to the distraction of the World Cup, one of the world’s most famous and significant sporting events.

The San Diego Clasico will return in the fall, though the dates have not been scheduled.

Though the World Cup semi-finals, featuring Argentina, Brazil, Germany and the Netherlands, begin Tuesday with the Brazil-Germany match, and the World Cup third-place game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday and the final at noon Sunday, the Clasico was scheduled for the same weekend.

Two San Diego Classico matches were set for 5 p.m. Saturday, featuring Club Tijuana vs. Cruz Azul and Dorados vs. Club America.

“With soccer fans around the world focused on the World Cup right now, we haven’t seen the same level of fan interest for this year’s San Diego Clasico that we saw last year,” said Anthony Fernandez, with event promoter Pazzo Sports.

“For that reason, we’ve decided to postpone the Clasico until the fall.”

He said anyone who has purchased tickets will be able to receive a refund at the point of purchase. The organizers said a new date will be announced later this summer.
