The transformation of a Cold War-era missile plant into a 1,500-home residential neighborhood took a major step forward Wednesday with the opening of Vive on the Park.

The seven-story, 302-unit building by Sunroad Enterprises in Kearny Mesa opened with political and business leaders cutting a ribbon and stressing the importance of new housing.

“We need more housing in San Diego…great, quality housing that is represented by Vive on the Park,” said Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

He noted that the new apartment building is in “the heart of one of San Diego’s most important employment centers.”

The building offers more than 20 different floor plans ranging from 532-square-foot studios to 1,409-square-foot three-bedroom apartments. There is underground parking, an outdoor pool deck, fitness center, rooftop lounges and game rooms.

It is located next to Spectrum Park and earlier, low-rise housing also developed by Sunroad.

The company has spent nearly 17 years developing the 40-acre parcel where General Dynamics once built Tomahawk missiles. Major tenants include Sharp HealthCare, Jack in the Box and ResMed.

But company founder and president Aaron Feldman said the new luxury apartment building stands out. “This is one of the projects that has made us all proud,” he said.
