A reputed gang member who snatched a deposit bag from a customer at a downtown bank pleaded guilty Tuesday to a robbery charge.
Fathy Mohammad Abdusalam, 26, is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 18.
San Diego police said Abdusalam grabbed the bank bag from a pizza-shop manager at the Wells Fargo branch office in the 400 block of B Street and fled shortly before 9 a.m. on Sept. 6.
The victim ran after Abdusalam for several blocks, then flagged down a patrol officer, who took over the foot chase. The officer caught up with the suspect and arrested him in the 1100 block of Seventh Avenue.
At the defendant’s arraignment, a prosecutor told a judge that Abdusalam has engaged in “violent gang activity,” including witness intimidation, since 2004.
