Four marines and one sailor were treated for decompression sickness the day after a scheduled training mission, according to a statement released Thursday from the Marines Corps Air Station Miramar.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, A C-130J from Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron departed the Miramar air station with 46 passengers onboard and experienced a loss of pressurization at 21,000 feet, the statement read.
“The air crew expertly executed appropriate procedures and safely landed at MCAS Miramar,” the statement continued.
While there were no immediate reports of injury, the next day four marines and one sailor from 3rd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion based at Camp
Pendleton showed signs of decompression sickness.
All were treated at Naval Medical Center San Diego and none required hospitalization, according to the MCAS statement.
It’s unclear why the aircraft lost pressurization and officials said the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
