A 20-year-old woman was fatally struck by a freight train Thursday night in Carlsbad.

Witnesses spotted the woman as she walked onto the tracks in the vicinity of Avenida Encinas and Palomar Airport Road shortly before 10:30 p.m. and was struck by a southbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train, San Diego Sheriff’s Deputy Jeffery Houser said.

She died at the scene, Houser said. Her name was not immediately available.

Houser said the sheriff’s department’s Coaster and Railroad Enforcement Unit had launched an investigation.

Anyone with information on what happened was asked to call the sheriff’s department at (858) 565-5200.
