A man threatening to jump off a bridge onto the 5 Freeway in University City Wednesday was safely brought down and detained by officers, according to police reports.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 5 at the Nobel Drive overpass in University City were closed during the evening rush hour due to the apparently suicidal man clinging to the edge of the bridge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP had issued a congestion alert for the stretch of freeway as officers persuaded the man to get off the span.

All lanes were reopened shortly before 6:30 p.m., but traffic remained heavier than normal along the stretch of freeway due to the incident.
