A pedestrian was killed Wednesday when he ran in front of a passenger train as it approached the Oceanside Transit Center.

The fatality was believed to be a suicide, sheriff’s Sgt. Jason King said.

The northbound Amtrak train was traveling at about 50 mph with its warning horn sounding when the unidentified man, who had been standing near to the tracks, darted into its path shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to sheriff’s officials. He died at the scene.

Coaster and Sprinter trains were running upwards of an hour behind schedule as of late morning, according to North County Transit District officials.
