A man was pronounced dead in Chula Vista after the car he was driving crashed through a fence, a garage and another fence and sheared off a gas line at the property next door.

It happened at 4:15 p.m. Saturday in the 600 block of Carla Avenue near East J Street, said Chula Vista Police Lt. Christine Penwell.

Witnesses told police an older model white Nissan 300Z was traveling on J Street at a high rate of speed when it crossed into oncoming traffic, hit a sidewalk, went through a front yard fence and then a garage on Carla Avenue, Penwell said.

The car travelled through the garage and another fence then sheared off a gas line at the next property, she said.

There was no explosion, Penwell said. Residents of both homes wanted to leave for the night so a community group assisted them.

An off-duty paramedic and a retired firefighter were in the area and started CPR immediately but thedriver was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, she said.

“It looks like at this point in time he had some type of medical episode, possibly cardiac in nature,” Penwell said. “There was no evidence of drugs or alcohol.”

The man’s age was not released. The incident remains under investigation, she said.
