One driver was arrested for drunken driving during a police checkpoint in Escondido that ended Sunday morning.
The checkpoint was intended to get drunk drivers off the road and those without valid drivers licenses. It was set up at the intersection of Second Avenue and Broadway from 5 p.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday, according to Lt. Mike Kearney.
“Drivers whose only offense was being unlicensed to drive were given the opportunity to locate the registered owner of the vehicle to either take or assign possession of the vehicle to a licensed driver,” Kearney said.
“Fourteen vehicles were released to the owner or a designated driver,” he said. There were four vehicles impounded at the checkpoint.
Of the 1,447 vehicles that were driven through the checkpoint, 939 were screened by officers and 44 vehicles were sent to a secondary screening.
Officers issued a total of 44 citations for traffic violations. That included 23 citations including four for driving on a suspended license, 15 for unlicensed driving and four for not having insurance.
In addition, two drivers were cited for having unrestrained children in the car.
The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
