If your old reliable burger/noodles/beer joint is starting to seem too routine, let the restaurant authority, Zagat, tip you off about some of the hottest places to try now in San Diego.

According to Zagat, “a crop of newcomers” is heating up San Diego’s restaurant scene.

Eight local restaurants made Zagat’s cut, and they represent a variety of cuisines, including Japanese and Mexican, while also including niches, such as eateries that focus on just pork or seafood.

The neighborhoods included are La Jolla and Miramar in the north, North Park and University Heights in the city center and Pacific Beach and Little Italy to the south.

Zagat is pointing you to a venerable like Sushi Ota, but also to more recent favorites, like the expanding Puesto and Carnitas Snack Shack, which have added or are in the process of adding new locations.

And there’s a touch of fame, if you want to track a Top Chef winner. Richard Blais’ Juniper & Ivy is part of the list too.

Other eateries that collected the Zagat honors are Rakiraki Ramen, Great Maple, Ironside Fish & Oyster and SuperNatural Sandwiches.
