District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis told the Union-Tribune that she won’t seek re-election after 14 years as the county’s top prosecutor.
Dumans told the newspaper on Monday, but asked that the news not be made public until she could tell her staff on Tuesday, after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
According to the newspaper, she has not decided whether she will complete the current term — her fourth — or step down earlier.
“I have other things to do. I’ve been in public service now for 42 years and, you know, I just thought the timing was right,” she was quoted as saying.
Dumanis ran for mayor of San Diego in 2012, but lost in the primary and subsequently endorsed Carl DeMaio. Her current term as district attorney ends in 2018.
