Rep. Scott Peters’ re-election campaign on Wednesday challenged former San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio to a series of debates leading up to the general election on Nov. 4.
Peters, a Democrat and first-term Congressman, and DeMaio, a Republican, led the field in Tuesday’s primary. Peters received 42 percentof the vote to DeMaio’s 36 percent. Two Republican candidates, Kirk Jorgensen and Fred Simon, were eliminated in the primary, leaving Peters and DeMaio to face off in November.
“The contrast between Scott Peters and Tea Party candidate Carl DeMaio could not be more stark; we are eager to compare Scott’s record of bipartisan leadership to Carl’s record of divisiveness and extremism,” said Campaign Manager MaryAnne Pintar.
DeMaio, who the Washington Post recently included in a list of the top 40 U.S. leaders under 40 years old, has positioned himself as a “new generation Republican” who is willing to fight for reforms.
The Peters campaign proposes five debates on issues ranging from jobs and the economy to environmental protection and government reform. DeMaio has said previously that he is open to debates.
The 52nd District includes Poway, Coronado, and a large part of the city of San Diego.
