Strong and potentially damaging Santa Ana winds will spread throughout San Diego County Saturday.
A National Weather Service wind advisory for the mountains and valleys will be in effect from 9 a.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday. Winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour and gusts up to 50 mph are expected in most areas, but forecasters said localized gusts up to 50 mph are expected throughout the advisory period.
“A strong Santa Ana wind event will bring strong and widespread northeast winds Friday and Saturday,” according to the weather service. “With this event, strong and damaging winds are likely in many areas not usually impacted by strong offshore winds.”
Forecasters said localized gusts may reach 60 mph along coastal mountain slopes. The winds may make for hazardous driving conditions, especially for drivers in high-profile vehicles.
The winds may make for hazardous driving conditions, especially for motorists in high-profile vehicles on Interstate 8 east of Alpine.
Sustained wind speeds of 40 mph or more or gusts of at least 58 mph can cause property damage. The offshore winds will begin to dissipate Saturday afternoon, followed by warmer weather and only light winds on Sunday. However, forecasters said another round of moderate to potentially strong offshore winds would be possible later next week.
The winds are expected to lighten up Saturday night into Sunday, according to the weather service.
